Benzalkonium chloride

Benzalkonium chloride (alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride) is an organic compound that is used as an antiseptic and spermicide. This chemical is seriously harmful to all life if not diluted. However it has long deemed safe for human use, when used correctly. It is widely used in eyewashes, hand and face washes, mouthwashes, spermicidal creams, and in various other cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants.

It's not often used in Aquariums. However due to the rise of Chytrid fungus and a report (See Chytrid fungus link on how to treat) which showed that it can significantly reduce the mortality of aquatic frogs infected with this fungus if it is bathed several times.

  • This chemical is usually only available from Doctors or Veterinarians.
  • Typically your pet shop should be using this method to treat any aquatic frogs that they get into stock or to quarantine the frogs for 3 months.
