Identification

Typical Butterflyfish in shape. Juveniles closely resemble juvenile Heniochus monoceros and Heniochus acuminatus. The white ring around the mouth, the black instead of the yellow caudal fin and the complete ocular band distinguishes it from H. acuminatus at all sizes. Adults have black-centered scales in the main white band, juveniles have long banners. Has a mostly black face.
