Origin

Found in fast-flowing pebble-strewn hill streams throughout Asia, from Pakistan to Thailand.

Sexing

Difficult to visually sex.

Tank compatibility

Best in species tanks, but will not tolerate others of its own kind in close quarters. Due to it's preference to having a strong will only work with fish that tolerant similar conditions such as Danios.

Diet

In the wild they eat aquatic insects. In the aquarium they like live or frozen worms.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment Specifics

In the aquarium this fish should be provided with sand in which to burrow and plenty of other hiding places. It should also have highly oxygenated water and a good current.

Behaviour

Territorial and aggressive towards others of its own kind and similar looking fish.

Identification

This is an unusual and elongate fish which is olive brown in colour and lighter on the belly. It has a broad blunt head with several sets of long barbels and 34-36 vertebrae. The eyes are small and the fins are generally translucent, the caudal fin is forked.
