Origin

Caribbean; from southern Florida, USA and the Bahamas to São Paulo, Brazil.

Sexing

Protogynous hermaphrodite.

Tank compatibility

A relatively peaceful fish suitable for peaceful communities and is considered reef safe, although may nip at bristle-worms.

Diet

Omnivorous, will eat flakes, and pellets.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment Specifics

Prefers a spacious tank with plenty of live rock and hiding places. Needs a deep sand bed typically used by that genus.

Behaviour

Generally peaceful towards tank mates. Typical of wrasses, they can be kept in a harem with a single male. May get aggressive towards related species, but will tolerate other genera.

Identification

This fish is yellowish-orange, with red facial stripes; sometimes has a small black ocellus behind its eyes, and a second one on the dorsal fin.
