Sexing[edit]

The belly of sexually mature males will turn orange.


Environment specifics[edit]

May exist in freshwater, but more commonly prefer brackish water. This fish enjoys vegetation.


Identification[edit]

Commonly 4-5cm (1.6-2"). This fish has 1 spine on each pelvic fin in addition to its 3-4 dorsal spines. There are 28 (or more) bony plates on each side of the fish. The caudal peduncle is narrow with a short, lateral keel.
